lyrics

Wheel O’ Time

All I remember was fallin’ asleep and bein’ pushed out into the cold.

Walkin’ and talkin’ just seemed to come natural

but it’s hard to learn to do what you’re told.

ABC’s and 123’s, bugs and bikes and basketballs,

Preacher man with a book in his hand: rules, regulations, and laws.

Time keeps a-rollin’ like a wheel and where it’s goin’

I just don’t know.

Prayin’ on my knees, fistfights, spellin’ bees,

and a rope swingin’ over the pond,

Rock radio, and mowin’ machines, and wonderin’ why Daddy was gone,

Smokin’ big leaves from an ol’ Coke can,

Frank Zappa singin’ “Titties and Beer”.

Don’t know what became of that bright-eyed kid

but I don’t see him here in the mirror.

Time keeps a-rollin’ like a wheel and where it’s goin’

I just don’t know.

But I can see it run away, day by day,

like a herd o’ wild horses stampedin’ over the hills.

I’m harder to surprise, more critical eyes,

longer in the tooth, stubborn, and stronger of will.

You don’t have to move to get where you’re goin’,

Cuz the wheel o’ time keeps you rollin’ on.

Pretty soon, you can do the work of a man

and you learn to play grown-up games,

Ten lucky fingers where the touch still lingers

long after you’ve forgotten their names.

Then, you pull the trigger with one in particular

and you couple ‘neath the scuppernong vines.

Nine months later, there’s a little tiny baby.

Soon, the little baby’s gonna be nine.

Time keeps a-rollin’ like a wheel and where it’s goin’

I just don’t know.
